A Life-Changing Week with MEDLIFE - A Sister Testimonial

Traveling to Riobamba, Ecuador with the University of Kentucky’s MEDLIFE chapter was truly one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. I went into this journey hoping to learn more about global health and service, and I walked away with so much more than I ever could have imagined.

During our time there, we worked alongside doctors and dentists to provide care to communities with very limited access to healthcare. In just a few days, we were able to treat over 900 patients, which is absolutely incredible and life changing. What impacted me most were the small, personal moments, the conversations and the smiles, and the way families waited patiently just for the opportunity to be seen.

One of the most powerful experiences for me was helping install water tanks for a community who only have access to running water for one hour, twice a week. Watching this bring such visible relief and joy completely shifted my perspective as water is something that we never think twice about. It reminded me that healthcare isn’t just about treatment, but it’s about access, dignity, and giving people the basic resources they deserve.

Working in the dental station was especially close to my heart. Assisting with procedures and teaching children how to brush their teeth properly may sound small, but it felt incredibly meaningful. We had the opportunity to go to a local school with over 300 children and teach them the importance of oral health and even hand out hygiene products. All of their faces litting up so bright as they received each item will be a memory I will never forget. Oral health is so often overlooked, yet it affects confidence, comfort, and overall well-being. Being able to serve in that way strengthened my passion for the healthcare field and reminded me why I feel so called to it in the first place.

This journey challenged me, humbled me, and reminded me why service and compassion matter so deeply. The communities welcomed us with so much kindness, and working alongside such passionate individuals completely changed my perspective in the best way. It was also so impactful to be alongside so many other sisters in Alpha Delta Pi.

MEDLIFE truly changed my life and I am so thankful for every lesson, every conversation, every moment of growth, and every memory made along the way. This experience and the people I met will stay with me forever, and I’m so proud to be part of something that truly makes a difference!
